Institute for Leadership Development Workshop

"Tomorrow's Leaders Today"

Monday, November 6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Covering three topics, this day-long workshop will train leaders how to build a team, embrace change, and how to become more engaged in the industry. This will be a fast paced, interactive workshop with activities and group discussions.

How to Build a Team

In today’s challenging and ever changing workplace, the ability to work in teams becomes very important to the success of an organization. To compete, organizations must make maximum use of their most important asset – its people. The TEAM concept has been able to tap into the untouched potential and creativity of a workforce that the traditional work structure had discouraged and helps organizations increase levels of work performance ownership and commitment to excellence. Just labeling a group of people as a “team” is NOT a true team. Building a true team takes time. A true team goes through 4 distinct phases: Forming, Norming, Storming, and Performing.

Upon completion, learners will be able to:
  • Define the four stages of team development: Forming, Norming, Storming, and Performing.
  • Describe the current status in your business of each of the four stages.
  • Identify at least one step that can be taken in each stage to improve your team back home.

Leadership through Industry Engagement

Do you want to lend your experience in and enthusiasm for the Outdoor Hospitality industry but just don’t know how to get started? Jeff Sims has been a park owner, past Chairman of the Board of Directors for arvc, and is now on staff with arvc. He has seen a lot and will share the many different ways you may become involved in the industry locally, regionally, and nationally.

Upon completion, learners will be able to:
  • List at least one way you can become involved in the industry locally, regionally, and nationally.

Understanding and Appreciating Change

This session is based on the best-selling business book Who Moved My Cheese. It is a simple, fun and motivational parable that reveals profound truths. It is an amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a “Maze” and look for “Cheese” to nourish them and make them happy. The four characters are “Sniff and Scurry” and “Hem and Haw.” These characters act a lot like the people we work with on a daily basis. “Cheese” is a metaphor for what you have in life and the “Maze” is where you look for what you want – a good job, great relationships, money, a particular possession, etc. In the story, the characters are faced with unexpected and unwanted change that will forever alter their lives. Come and enjoy the humor of the four characters going through the “Maze.” You will leave with unique insights into how to deal with change that can last a lifetime.

Upon completion, learners will be able to:
  • Describe simple ideas you can use to succeed during organizational change.
  • Identify specific skills you can use to benefit yourself and your organization.
  • List skills that promote working as a team to achieve faster and more successful change.

Suggested preparation: Read the book, "Who Moved My Cheese" and bring 2-3 job descriptions of key people in your organization to work from.

Successful Park Operations Tour (SPOT)

Monday, November 6 - 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (times approx.)
Hosted by: Jake Druck, Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground, and Amy Morin, OHP, Cottonwood Camp

Come with us on Mondayas we tour parks and hospitality operations in the area to give you new ideas you can take back home and apply at your park.

Participate in either the West of Raleigh Tour or the South of Raleigh Tour. On either tour you will visit four parks in and around Raleigh, and be back in time for dinner. While traveling to and from each park your host will provide educational learning opportunities to help you better understand how to quickly assess a business through the use of a quick SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis. Complimentary snacks, beverages and a sit down lunch will be provided.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
2. Explain the business value of a quick SWOT analysis
3. Complete a quick SWOT analysis for all parks visited.

Get Involved! Mixer

Do you want to gain more leadership experience that will help build your resume and increase your park’s exposure to the industry? Or do you just want to give back to the profession?

Well here’s how you can. Attend the Get Involved mixer, Monday evening from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and learn how you can contribute to arvc and the outdoor hospitality industry. Representatives from the arvc Board, ARVC Foundation Board of Trustees, Education Committee, Young Professionals Group, and Chairman’s Club will give a short overview of how you can get involved in each of these areas. They will also be around all evening, along with other representatives, to answer any questions you may have on getting more involved with the arvc community. Join us at this casual mixer and learn how you can Get Involved!

Building Teams in the Good Times and Bad
Danny “Chocolate” Myers

Building teams is not always easy. It’s not just a group of people with a common work environment. It’s ensuring that each team member understands their individual roles and that their responsibility for the collective performance of the group. Danny “Chocolate” Myers has extensive experience in working on successful teams as a previous pit crew member for many NASCAR drivers, including Dale Earnhardt, Senior. Chocolate was with Dale during his 1998 win and his fatal crash in 2001, both at the Daytona 500. Chocolate will share how the team worked together through both the good and bad times to become an even better performing team.

Danny “Chocolate” Myers has spent his entire life involved in motorsports. His father, Bobby Myers, was one of the early pioneers in NASCAR racing and was a champion on many of the short tracks around the southeast during the late-40s through the mid-50s. His father was killed driving the #4 car for Lee Petty, Richard Petty’s dad, during the Southern 500 in 1957.

Over the past 35-plus years, Chocolate has worked with his longtime friend, Richard Childress at Richard Childress Racing. Many of the years were spent on the pit crew as the fuel man (gas man) for 7-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, Sr. It was Chocolate who helped to create the very first NASCAR team hauler with Featherlite Trailers owner Conrad Clement in Cresco, Iowa. Chocolate also helped to develop the prototype of today’s pit box with SnapOn Tools.

These days, Chocolate is the curator of the RCR Museum. You can also find Chocolate weekdays from 11-3 as the popular and charismatic host and analyst on Sirius/XM NASCAR radio Channel 90 show “Tradin’ Paint”. He hosts the show from his studio at the RCR Museum.
